Omega watches

Omega pairs a long record in precision timing with some of the most recognisable watches ever made. The Speedmaster Professional was qualified by NASA for spaceflight and worn on the Moon in 1969, while the Seamaster family runs from the Diver 300M to the Seamaster 300 and Aqua Terra. Co-Axial escapements and Master Chronometer certification underpin the current collections.

A short history of Omega

Louis Brandt began assembling pocket watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. In 1894 his sons launched a calibre called Omega, and it proved so successful that the company eventually took its name. The business moved to Biel/Bienne, where it is still based, and has served as official timekeeper at the Olympic Games since 1932.

Omega's technical milestones are recent as well as historic. The Co-Axial escapement went into series production in 1999, and since 2015 Master Chronometer calibres have been tested by the Swiss federal institute METAS for accuracy and resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.

Speedmaster, Seamaster and more

The Speedmaster appeared in 1957 as a sports and racing chronograph. NASA qualified it for crewed missions in 1965, and in 1969 it went to the Moon with Apollo 11. The Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch remains a hand-wound chronograph: for decades it used calibre 1861, and since 2021 the Master Chronometer calibre 3861.

The Seamaster dates from 1948 and now covers the Diver 300M, the Planet Ocean, the vintage-inspired Seamaster 300 and the more understated Aqua Terra. Alongside these sit the Constellation and De Ville, which give Omega watches a breadth few brands can match.

Buying a pre-owned Omega

When you buy an Omega pre-owned, start with the reference and calibre, as these define the generation. On a Speedmaster, check the hesalite or sapphire crystal, the tachymeter bezel and the chronograph pushers. On Seamaster divers, look at the bezel action and the condition of the bracelet clasp. Service history is worth asking about, especially on older chronographs. For vintage pieces, original dial and hands carry the most weight.

Every watch at Bare Watches is strictly inspected before sale, and the condition, box and papers are described per watch. You can view a watch by appointment in Berlicum, and trade-in is possible if you want to part exchange your current watch.

Frequently asked questions

Both are hand-wound chronographs in the Moonwatch tradition. The 1861 has the longer track record and appeals to buyers who value continuity with earlier models. The 3861 adds a Co-Axial escapement and Master Chronometer certification, which brings higher resistance to magnetism and tighter accuracy standards. The choice is mostly about personal preference, budget and which generation you feel drawn to.
