Cartier watches

Cartier approaches watchmaking from the world of design. The Paris house, founded in 1847, gave the wristwatch some of its most enduring shapes: the square Santos, the rectangular Tank, the round Ballon Bleu and the Pasha with its capped crown. Roman numerals, blued steel hands and a cabochon on the crown give Cartier watches a character that is recognisable at a glance.

A jeweller turned watchmaker

Louis-François Cartier took over a Paris jewellery workshop in 1847. His grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques later turned the business into an international house with branches in Paris, London and New York. Cartier is now part of the Richemont group.

The company's watchmaking began in earnest with the Santos. Louis Cartier designed it in 1904 for his friend, the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time without taking his hands off the controls. It is one of the earliest wristwatches designed for men.

Tank, Santos, Pasha and Ballon Bleu

The Tank was designed in 1917, its outline inspired by the tanks of the First World War seen from above. It has appeared in many forms since, including the Tank Louis Cartier, the Tank Must and the Tank Française of 1996 with its integrated bracelet. The Santos remains Cartier's sporting square, recognisable by the screws on its bezel.

The Pasha of 1985 brought a round, bolder design with a protective cap over the crown, while the Ballon Bleu de Cartier of 2007 tucks the crown beneath a curved guard. The Panthère and the Ronde complete a collection where many models exist in both quartz and automatic versions.

Buying a Cartier pre-owned

With Cartier watches, the case is the design, so heavy polishing that softens the sharp edges of a Tank or Santos is worth avoiding. Check that the cabochon on the crown is intact, that the bracelet links are complete for your wrist, and that dial and hands are original. Many Cartier dials hide a small signature within one of the Roman numerals. On quartz models, ask about the movement's condition and battery history.

Every watch at Bare Watches is strictly inspected before sale, and we describe condition, box and papers per watch. You can view a watch by appointment in Berlicum, and trade-in is possible.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on how you wear your watch. Quartz models are slim, accurate and easy to live with, which suits dress watches such as the Tank. Automatic versions appeal to those who enjoy a mechanical movement and do not mind keeping it wound. Both are genuine Cartier designs. We state the movement type clearly for every watch in our collection.
