Breitling watches
Breitling has built chronographs for pilots for much of its history, and its watches still have the clarity of a cockpit instrument. The Navitimer with its slide-rule bezel, the Chronomat, the Superocean dive watch and the Avenger form the core of the range, many of them powered by the in-house Calibre B01. Founded in Saint-Imier in 1884, the brand is now based in Grenchen.

Three generations of chronograph makers
Léon Breitling opened his workshop in Saint-Imier in 1884, specialising in chronographs and precision counters. His son Gaston introduced a wrist chronograph with an independent push-piece in 1915, separating the chronograph from the crown. In 1934 his grandson Willy added a second push-piece for resetting, the layout most chronographs still follow.
Aviation shaped the brand from then on. Breitling is based in Grenchen and today produces its own chronograph movements alongside a broader range of sports watches.
Navitimer, Chronomat and Superocean
The Navitimer of 1952 put a circular slide rule on the bezel, letting pilots calculate speed, distance and fuel consumption on the wrist. The Superocean followed in 1957 as Breitling's dive watch and now ranges from modern divers to the Superocean Heritage. The Chronomat, with its rider tabs and rouleaux bracelet, is the brand's all-round sports chronograph.
In 1995 the Emergency introduced a built-in distress beacon, and in 2009 Breitling presented the in-house Calibre B01, a column-wheel chronograph with around 70 hours of power reserve. You will also find the Avenger, the Premier and the Galactic among Breitling watches on the pre-owned market.
What to check on a pre-owned Breitling
Many Breitling references exist in several case materials and dial variants, so confirm the exact reference and movement. Test every chronograph function, turn the bezel to check its action, and look at the rider tabs and slide-rule scale for wear. On bracelet models, check the links and clasp for play. Emergency models need specialist attention to the transmitter, so service history is particularly relevant there.
