Casio watches

Casio was founded in Tokyo in 1946 and is best known in watchmaking for G-Shock, the shock-resistant watch introduced in 1983. Most G-Shocks are affordable everyday tools. At the top of the range, however, sits MR-G: metal G-Shocks assembled in Japan, with titanium cases and refined finishing. The MR-G Frogman brings Casio's diving line into that premium territory.

From calculators to G-Shock

Tadao Kashio founded the company in 1946, and in 1957 it became Casio Computer Co., known first for its calculators. Watches followed in the 1970s, but the defining moment came in 1983, when engineer Kikuo Ibe and his team launched the first G-Shock after extensive drop testing.

The brief was simple: a watch that would not break when dropped. Protecting the module with shock-absorbing parts inside a tough outer case remains the principle behind every G-Shock since. That first model, the DW-5000C, also set the rectangular shape that Casio still produces in updated form.

Frogman and MR-G

The Frogman arrived in 1993 as a G-Shock built for diving, and it has become one of the most collected G-Shock lines. Today's models are easy to recognise by their asymmetrical case. MR-G, launched in 1996, is Casio's premium metal G-Shock, assembled in Japan with titanium cases and surfaces polished by hand.

The MR-G Frogman combines the two: a titanium diver's watch with solar charging and radio-controlled timekeeping, finished far beyond a standard G-Shock. It is a serious watch in its own right, although it remains a quartz instrument rather than a mechanical one.

What to check on a pre-owned Casio

Premium G-Shocks exist in many variants, so the exact model code matters. Check that the code on the caseback matches the papers, and look closely at the titanium case and bracelet, since deep scratches in coated surfaces are difficult to remove. Confirm that solar charging and radio reception work, and that box, papers and any spare bracelet links are complete. The rechargeable cell in a solar watch ages over time, which is another reason to test charging.

Bare Watches strictly inspects every watch before sale and describes condition, box and papers per listing. If you want to buy a Casio MR-G, you can view it by appointment in Berlicum or have it shipped fully insured with DHL Express.

Frequently asked questions

Most G-Shocks are not, and they are not meant to be. The MR-G line is different, with titanium cases, hand-polished surfaces, assembly in Japan and prices well into luxury territory. It remains a quartz watch, so its appeal lies in engineering, durability and finish rather than in a mechanical movement.
