TAG Heuer watches

TAG Heuer traces its roots to the workshop Edouard Heuer opened in Saint-Imier in 1860, and the chronograph remains at the heart of the brand. The Carrera, Monaco and Autavia grew out of motor racing in the 1960s, while the Aquaracer and Formula 1 offer robust, accessible sports watches. The in-house Calibre Heuer 02 powers several of today's chronographs.

From Heuer to TAG Heuer

Edouard Heuer founded his company in Saint-Imier in 1860. He patented a crown-winding system in 1869 and, in 1887, the oscillating pinion, a chronograph mechanism that is still in use today. Timing instruments for cars, aircraft and sport became the company's speciality.

In 1985 Heuer was acquired by the TAG group and the name became TAG Heuer. The brand has been part of LVMH since 1999 and is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Carrera, Monaco and the other collections

The 1960s produced the models that define TAG Heuer watches to this day. The Autavia wrist chronograph arrived in 1962, followed by the Carrera in 1963, named after the Carrera Panamericana road race. The square Monaco of 1969 became famous when Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film Le Mans.

The Formula 1 collection was introduced in 1986 and remains an approachable entry point, in quartz and automatic form. The Aquaracer is the brand's dive watch, and current Aquaracer Professional 300 models are water-resistant to 300 metres. Movement matters across all collections: Calibre 5 is a three-hand automatic, Calibre 16 an automatic chronograph, and the Calibre Heuer 02 an in-house chronograph with column wheel and vertical clutch.

What to check when you buy a TAG Heuer

If you want to buy a TAG Heuer pre-owned, the reference on the papers or caseback tells you the collection, size and movement. Check that the bezel, dial and bracelet match that reference, test the chronograph start, stop and reset, and look for wear on the bracelet clasp. Limited and special editions should come with their matching box and documentation. For quartz models, ask when the battery was last replaced.
